Was your favorite moved based on a book ?

On a rainy night in Chennai I had tears rolling down  my cheek.I was watching the movie The MotorCycle Diaries.and there was this intense scene which brought out those tears.I felt so because I had read the book and could appreciate the feelings portrayed in the movie.Into the wild  is one book and one movie which I would carry with me always. The book is so awesome and the movie is very well made. But the movie remains with me just because i had read the book and could link to every small event in the movie. Here is a list of some 15 movies based on a book.If you have not seen one of these , do read the book and watch the movie, remember you will be reminded of the movie all throughout your life.

I would also rank the movies and books according to my liking :

Among these I had to wait a long time to read the lord of the rings. It was too bulky a book and somehow i found time to read it in the Christmas and new year period last December.

On Cricket and human behavior

Was reading an article in the ET today which made me write this post. The essence of this article was that we love ourself the most in the world and all our actions indirectly act towards satisfying this self-love.

I don't know who had this as a status message on the Shitbook,
"Loving someone who doesn't love you is like batting when you need 37 runs in 6 balls. You know it's impossible...but you still have a small hope that Ashish Nehra will bowl the last over."

Dear cricket fan, if you say that you love cricket let it be unrequited love. This statement may give you a few likes and comments and make you feel good but remember it was you in 2003 World cup celebrating Nehra's wickets. You must have forgot that he vomited on the sidelines after every over but still against all the odds delivered. His one match defined him as a good committed person. So why you liked him then and not today? It's not your fault , it is how you are.Humans seldom remember your achievements but talk about a  failure and there you are. It's in your subconscious to seek pleasures in anything. For all those cartoons on Ponting , dear photoshop experts and cartoonists please spare him.Why portray this as a revenge against Australia? Remember that you just one a match against an invincible side lead by Ponting. It was not a sad demise of a hero but a display of rising above all expectation. It was by no means a joke but a profound display of heroics. I know that appreciation is a difficult thing in life because it is something which you do for others and does not come naturally to you but refrain from mocking someone.

I know how the real lovers of cricket are.I know the feeling of despair when my side looses.I have lived and breathed cricket in the non internet era.I have stood for 8 hours straight to watch cricket matches outside a TV shop.I did not eat on the black day of Indian cricket in Eden Gardens.Cricket is not all about Tendulkars but about Mooneys as well.

Kindly do not spoil cricket by useless micro blogging.

Taming the mind

I am posting my latest picture here just to remind me that I also have the flavor of the greats because I can tame my mind.Loosing 11 kgs may seem just a number to some but for me it has come with lot of sacrifices and self control. The best among these was quitting the smoke.

Another chapter added to my pursuit of happiness.

Cheers to my self.

THE ROAD TO A FRIEND'S HOUSE IS NEVER LONG

"Would take u 5 years down the memory lane when on our first hostel night ,Tattu met with an accident and I spent the night with him in the hospital."

To me friendship has been about moments.Certain experiences and moments in which I have learnt a lot about friendship.I have taken up and given up things on the basis of my experiences. But my experiments with friendship have been flawless.I have found it to be a very innocent and unselfish relationship.Accepting someone as it is without imposing one's ideals is a great virtue.I feel that every other things tries to deter us away from the right(e.g. religion has a set of ideals which fall as correct) whereas friendship moves you closer to the truth. When others would have ridiculed it is friends which make your impossible goals to a possible one.Very few things makes you as strong as having a good friend.   Everyone needs an emotional confidence which friendship instills in our subconscious.

P.S. Taken from a discussion thread on FIKARNOT where I was asked to define my idea of friendship.

My Maiden Half Marathon story

Currently I am reading the second book by Lance Armstrong called,"Every Second Counts."To quote a few lines from the second chapter,"I know this much about myself: the surest way to get me do something is to tell me I can't.Explain to me that I can't possibly win the Tour De France again, and I have no choice but to try to win the Tour De France again." I also think the same way , I love to take new challenges in life.I have always told my friends to set small target and achieve them.Running is one such thing where u get instant results and success. Most of the battles in life are fought against others but the battles against your own self are the most challenging ones.In running every extra mile gives you a reason to be happy and motivates you towards a higher goal. The only motivation for me was to experience that feeling of reaching the finishing line.It is your experiences that gives you meaning in life. What lies in store for you in the next extra mile can be seen only by going that extra one.I remember being on top of peak in the Ombattu Gudde trek.We had reached the top, very early in the morning after lots of climbing , the previous day.Me and my friend were the early ones to reach the top.The Sunrise we saw was probably the most beautiful one i have ever seen and the experience is something which I still cherish to this day.Same was the feeling that drove me to this and I confess that every step I took during the run was painfully sweet.

If you run alone there are times when you want to give up, but running amongst thousands of athletes gives you that extra burst of adrenaline to just keep pushing.I had already decided that I will not rest or take water before 15 km.In the Kolkota half marathon the milestones were kept at every half a kilometer. This was very helpful because every target set was for half a km and achieved in short span of time and then mentally I had to fight for the next half. The only problem was that the race started at 7 a.m. and by 8 it was very hot and humid.I had completed the first 10 in an hour but the main challenge was the next half.If you are on the winning side of a football game you can understand that how endless the last 10 minutes were. This was the phase of the race between 12 to 15 km where every half km,seemed to be so long. But I stuck to my plan and rested after 15 km.Drank some water , cooled down the body a bit and then started for the remaining. Finally managed to complete the race in 2 hours 18 minutes. My hero of the race was a 70 year old who undertook this task.I avoid being some body but I felt that I want to be him.The elation and joy of the whole episode is so intense that one would like to do it again and again.

The marathon meant a lot to me.I had decided to participate in one some 8 months back.I knew i had the stamina and i had tested my strength in treks and cycling trips. But the job life had added that extra kilos which i had to shed.Football was a great help in attaining this goal. This was just a physical goal which I had to achieve. The main fight was against the mind.Running is very demanding mentally , it requires a lot of focus and commitment.I did most of my practice from December to Feb, the winter season in North India. All those early mornings posed a huge challenge of leaving the warmth of the blanket.I remember running in the early mornings in fog and the chill in my noses.I loved having a beer or two in the weekends and reading late in the nights. But the experience was worth the sacrifices. The beer I tasted yesterday after long 9 months was the best beer i have ever had in my life.

The City of joy and lonely wanderings on the Howrah bridge:

After finishing the race when I went back to my hotel room , I felt very lonely.I took bath and had my breakfast.I decided that I could not stay there alone and in spite of the pain in the legs , I went to roam around the Chandini Market. One of the reasons why like Kolkota is that it is undiluted.Unlike other cities there has not been many infrastructural changes. The market here was a typical street market with hundreds of small shops. There were lots of mobile repairing ,hardware, luggage and crockery shops. Amongst the cluster of these shops were few food and tea outlets.I wandered for about an hour for no particular reason probably I forgot myself in the crowd.I bought few beers and went back to the hotel room.I was lucky to see three back to back episodes of FRIENDS on TV and it enhanced my mood.It was then when the hotel restaurant boy knocked to take the lunch orders and also know the cricket score.I did not want to have the beers alone and i just invited him to join me and he happily accepted.

Few hours spent with a total stranger was awesome and I felt how cricket unites the whole nation. We live in a world where people are connected with each other by a few comments and likes on Facebook.A time will come when people will have coffee online and some techie will sell this idea and feel proud on being an entrepreneur. Most of the time we live in world where we meet people who are similar to us both financially and on knowledge terms. But this conversation I had was a learning lesson of a  different kind. You must have traveled a lot on trains but there will be one journey where u met someone and you still have the memory of him.

This new friend of mine had suggested to start early for Howrah as there were possibilities of a traffic jam.But the roads were deserted owing to the cricket match and I reached almost an hour before the departure time.I had had two highs one the runners high and then the barley effect.I would have not walked on the Howrah bridge owing to the pain , but then I had had a great day and this would make it even better.I made a round trip of the bridge on both the sides.Over the music of Pink Floyd I saw the gushing water and thought about the people who have the courage to jump from the bridge.I was reminded of all the red gulmohar trees besides the railway track and the bed of dry leaves in the forests.Ya this is the spring season here and I had a spring in my steps too.A good beginning to a runners life.

On Shawshank Redemption and a friend

I was watching the The Shawshank Redemption for the 6th time.In fact I have paused the movie to write this post, the reason being a friend.I watched it for the first time 6 years back with my roommate and at this very moment I was reminded of him.

I have very sporadic memories of the past. Some memories of which I remember every detail. One of those was of a night while returning from buying some grocery.I was 8 years old and feared the kabristan which came on the way to home.It was late, unusually quiet and a sudden gush of air terrified me.I knew bits and pieces of Hanuman Chalisa which I started chanting and ran the whole way to home.

But the first day of college is such a memory which everyone would recall. So it was the first evening when i met Dedh.I was amazed to see his apprehension on my being a Bihari. The first dinner in the mess was with dedh and mamme. When I saw the rice and sambhar in the hostel mess the only consolation was,"Chalo kha lenge yaar, bas sahi dost ban jayen." A lifetime friendship always stars in funny ways , sometimes over sambhar chawal.I can write so many things about him but let there be some for memories.
This movie is about friendship and hope but for me it is also a happy memory which I will always cherish.

To quote a line from the movie ,"Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies."

Show Me a Hero by Aditya Sudarshan

I received the review copy of this book a few days ago. I guess if you walk into a book store u will find a pool of new arrivals by Indian authors. The problem with these books is the same as with Bollywood. The tales vary from marriage, corporate life, adolescence, love to topics like losing virginity. The story telling is mostly plain in these books. I write down good lines from a book in my diary and read it from time to time. But I have rarely found any such lines in these books.

I would rate Aditya’s  book as readable , especially the second part. Vaibhav , the narrator is young and lives alone in Delhi. He lives a monotonous life until he bumps into his college mate Prashant.Prashant is a confident young guy coming from a rich family. He holds to his ideas very strongly and brings it to action. He decides to make a movie on a controversial cricketer. He holds a certain opinion about the cricketer and tries to bring it out through the movie. In this process he involves Vaibhav and others. However once they start shooting the movie they land into one trouble after another. However a mysterious death brings everything to a halt.

Aditya has done a satisfactory job in bringing the various pieces of the mystery together. I call it satisfying because at many instances things happen by coincidence. Rarely will a famous cricketer make a movie with kids and seldom do things happen so easily as it takes place in the book. You will find Lights Camera and Cricket written on the cover of the book. Don’t pick the book for the love of cricket because it talks more about the cricketer than cricket. Pick this book for a light read without thinking much about the facts.

About the author: Aditya Sudarshan is a fiction writer. He is the author of a novel,A Nice quiet Holiday,a play,Sensible People, and several short stories and television scripts. He also writes literary criticism for The Hindu Literary Review and other publications.
